Australia is vast. You only realise this when you try and leave. Get on a plane in Sydney and two movies later, you're still in Australia.
When I arrived here five years ago, I was under the misapprehension that I was pretty much the only person doing autism research. In fact, there were autism researchers scattered all over the place, but nobody really knew what anyone else was doing.
In 2009, Cheryl Dissanayake from Latrobe University organized a meeting in Melbourne of two dozen autism researchers from Australia and New Zealand. From that meeting eventually grew the Australasian Society for Autism Research - ASfAR for short.
ASfAR is open to anyone in Australia, New Zealand, and the surrounding region who has an interest in autism research. There are various different categories of membership depending on your background.
The ASfAR website will be up and running shortly, and we'll be holding our first scientific meeting in Sydney later this year (date to be announced).
If you're interested in joining ASfAR, there are more details and a membership application form here.
